The Origin of Masai Mara

The Masai Mara was first established in 1961 as a small wildlife sanctuary created to protect the area’s remarkable animal populations. In 1974, it was expanded into a game reserve, securing larger habitats and preserving its delicate ecosystem. Its name honors the Maasai people, who have coexisted with nature for generations, and the Mara River, which winds through the reserve.

Over the years, conservation efforts have played a vital role in maintaining the balance between wildlife and human activity. Local Maasai communities remain closely connected to the land, blending traditional lifestyles with modern conservation practices. Their presence has helped protect the cultural identity of the region while supporting eco-tourism.

Geography and landscape

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometers (580 square miles) in southwestern Kenya and forms part of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This vast system connects to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, which stretches across 25,000 square kilometers (9,700 square miles).

To the south, the Mara merges with the Serengeti, while the towering Siria Escarpment marks its western edge. Open savannah grasslands spread across the north and east, creating diverse habitats that sustain an incredible variety of wildlife. This unique geography makes the Masai Mara one of the most remarkable and rewarding safari destinations in Africa.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The Masai Mara enjoys a mild climate year-round, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F) and cooler nights dipping to around 10°C (50°F). The dry season, from June to October, offers warm, sunny days and cooler nights, making it perfect for safaris, especially to witness the Great Migration. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush greenery and vibrant birdlife, although rainfall can be frequent, particularly from March to May. This season offers fewer crowds and a peaceful experience, with the landscape becoming a beautiful, green paradise. Regardless of the season, it’s best to pack light, breathable clothes for warm days and a jacket for cooler nights.

July to October

The prime time to witness the Great Migration. This period features dramatic river crossings and high wildlife concentrations, making it a photographer’s paradise.

December to February

Ideal for predator sightings, as the big cats are more active, and for bird watching, with many migratory species in the reserve.

March to June

Known as the green season, the landscape becomes lush and vibrant, attracting a variety of wildlife. This time also offers fewer crowds, providing a more peaceful safari experience.

The Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of nature’s most spectacular events. Each year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles travel from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh pastures.
