History & Formation
The Origin of Masai Mara
Established in 1961, the Masai Mara began as a modest wildlife sanctuary aimed at protecting the region’s abundant and diverse animal populations. Later, it was designated as a game reserve in 1974, expanding its boundaries to ensure the preservation of the fragile ecosystem. Named after the indigenous Maasai people, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, and the Mara River, which snakes through the reserve, this land represents a delicate balance between human culture and wildlife conservation.
Over the decades, the Masai Mara has grown into one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations, attracting eco-tourists, photographers, and researchers from around the world.
Key Milestones in the History of the Masai Mara
Geography and landscape
The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometers (580 square miles) in southwestern Kenya, forming part of a larger ecosystem that includes the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania, which spans 25,000 square kilometers (9,700 square miles).
To the south lies the Serengeti, while the reserve’s western boundary is defined by the Siria Escarpment. The Mara is surrounded by expansive savannah grasslands to the north and east, creating a varied landscape that supports a rich diversity of wildlife. This unique geography makes the Maasai Mara a spectacular destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Climate and Best Time to Visit
The Masai Mara enjoys a mild climate year-round, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F) and cooler nights dipping to around 10°C (50°F). The dry season, from June to October, offers warm, sunny days and cooler nights, making it perfect for safaris, especially to witness the Great Migration. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush greenery and vibrant birdlife, although rainfall can be frequent, particularly from March to May. This season offers fewer crowds and a peaceful experience, with the landscape becoming a beautiful, green paradise. Regardless of the season, it’s best to pack light, breathable clothes for warm days and a jacket for cooler nights.
July to October
The prime time to witness the Great Migration. This period features dramatic river crossings and high wildlife concentrations, making it a photographer’s paradise.
December to February
Ideal for predator sightings, as the big cats are more active, and for bird watching, with many migratory species in the reserve.
March to June
Known as the green season, the landscape becomes lush and vibrant, attracting a variety of wildlife. This time also offers fewer crowds, providing a more peaceful safari experience.
